What about Gimp?
There is a version called GimpShop, that has the potential of Gimp with the menus in a photoshop style. It's freeware and requires X11 to be installed under Mac OS X.

Have you tried "Preview" which is part of OSX? Many users do not know it has nice basic editing capabilties and filters like sepia and such. Go up to the Preview menu and have a look at them.

Graphic Converter for about $30. But Elements is impressive. Both PS replacements.
Of course iPhoto.

Have you looked at iPhoto, which probably came with your new Mac? If it didn't come with the Mac, it's about $80 list price as part of iLife '06. It can be quite effective in combination with Photoshop Elements.

If you are interested in GIMP, you might also want to check out Seashore, which is a GIMP version with a more user-friendly interface.

Also try the currently free beta 3 version of Adobe Lightroom, pretty good app.
