iMac volume problem

My iMac was working fine, i plugged my headphones in and now the volume isnt changeable via the keyboard when i take the headphones out.

any solutions?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9), VMware with windows 8 (legit copy)

Have you looked at System Preferences-Sound-Output to verify the selected output device? Have you reset PRAM?

I don't know what PRAM is and yeah looked at the volume preferences already.

Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.
