Q: "Disk Not Ejected Properly" persists in Mavericks 10.9.1

I was hoping that Mavericks 10.9.1 would solve my "Disk Not Ejected Properly" problem that started with Mavericks.  No such luck.  Are others having this problem?

Notes, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

It's not your drive; it's not your software--it's your logic board.  I have a 13-Inch MacBook Pro, Late 2014, Retina display and a WD 8 TB Thunderbolt Duo external drive.  From the beginning, I got the "disc not ejected properly" at irregular intervals.  After eight months of it I got disgusted enough to visit an Apple Store and complain.  My computer was sent someplace and came back after four days with a new logic board. And the problem is solved.

Apparently Apple simply installed, in who knows how many or which models of their computers, defective logic boards, which don't provide consistent power such as will maintain a connection to an external drive.  Too bad.  Make them fix it.

That's interesting.  After my last incident I tried two fixes.  I swapped USB cables with the identical WD drive attached to my wife's 2009 iMac and I also contacted Western Digital tech support.  They had me download a new version of their firmware that the tech said was tested with Mavericks.  So far, two weeks and no ejects.

I kept getting the error Disc Not Ejected Properly.  I've got Mavericks 10.9.5, and run it on a Mac Mini.  I too have two external drives.  One i use a Time Machine, the other my SuperDuper back up.  I've read all post concerning this subject, and finally went to the never setting for sleeping as I leave my computer on 24/7.  So far I haven't gotten the error message anymore.  I don't know how it affects the rest of you as I seem to be the only Mac Mini on these postings and others with the problem.  Just my two cents on the subject.

I'm having the same issue with the brand new mac I bought six days ago. I never had an issue with my external hard drive just ejecting on it's own and then getting the error message when I wake up my computer that my drive wasn't ejected properly. I never ejected it in the first place, my mac was asleep, not shut down.

I disabled "put hard disks to sleep whenever possible as someone else suggested but I won't find out until later if it actually fixes the problem I'm having with Mavericks.

Just wondering BrandyAlexander if you have solved the issue?

I am just discovering this to be a possible problem and I want to test the short cut solutions before exploring longer routes. So far I have tried unpicking the 'Put Hard disks to sleep when possible' in Energy Saver, and also went through the steps outlined by Robster in an earlier related thread: Disk not ejected properly

So far the problem has not reoccurred, but it's very early days.

The idea of having having to replace the logic board on what is virtually brand new MBP 15" seems outrageous........ (given their cost and reputation)

I have a similar problem with a 1 TB "My Passport WD" external drive for the last weeks, which was working properly. I can't remember if it started after updating my Mac OS X to Mavericks. Now, every time I switch it to my Mac, I get the message "Disk not ejected properly", even when the unit is already properly switched before statring the system, and the unit is not recognized. I have changed the cable and unchecked "Put hard drive to sleep when possible" box in "System Preferences", "Energy saver", but neither one works.

Just logging the issue so that it's on record.

I have multiple external USB 3.0 drives connected to my 2014 Retina iMac via USB cables. I get the Drives Not Ejected Properly error daily. I have to reboot the mac to get them to mount every time I want to work. I've called AppleCare and they've told me that this is a known issue though they're not able to say if or when it might get addressed. They AppleCare agent was sympathetic and recommended that I log this in the forums so here I am.

I'd very much like to downgrade to an older version of the OS but I think I'd run into other issues given I'm on the Retina hardware which likely requires special drivers. Sigh...

Here's hoping Apple releases a fix. This is one very expensive machine to have to reboot every few hours.

It must be a problem from the Macbook Pro.  It does it on my laptop but I also own a Mac Pro from 2009 with the OS X Yosemite with four internal HDD's plus one external HDD, but none of the hard drives are ejected ever.

It still persists in 10.9.5. So disappointing!

I have the new i mac 5K obviously with the latest version Yosemite and just recently two of my USB external devises started the same annoying Disk not ejected properly, I have tried every thing possible from reformatting them, switching ports, to name changing, repairing, re-booting, it really is maddening, my reply is just meant to show that Apple has still not figured out how to resolve the issue.

This makes a lot of sense -- best fix posted here. I'd tried some of the other things mentioned with no luck. Thank you for taking the time to try it and share.

Make sure to uncheck this option in both the "battery" and "power adapter" tabs if you work with a Macbook. I have the following setting on my Desktop:Bildschirmfoto 2015-12-14 um 10.15.48.png

I've been using a MacBookPro, early 2011 with an external drive for a number of years. I've never seen that message unless the power went out or I inadvertently unplugged the drive.

I now have a late 2015 iMac. I recently purchased an Insignia USB 3.0 hub and an external SSD. Both the SSD and my old USB 2.0 drive plugged into that hub. Now when I wake the computer in the morning I would have at least 10 of those notifications. Called Apple and they didn't really know, so they had me try various fixes, with no luck.

I bought a new 4 Terabyte USB 3.0 drive and plugged it directly into the iMac.  So far, no notifications. I still have the hub with keyboard, tablet, iPhone all plugged in. The SSD I plugged into the router.

I think my issue may have been related to the hub. Sure, I could have taken a chance and just replaced the hub, but I really wanted better performance from the external drive.

I don't think it OS related.

    I hope that helps someone.

    Good luck!

Perhaps a bit rhetorical, but why would Mac OS have this setting available at all if it causes so many problems?
