"Disk Not Ejected Properly" persists in Mavericks 10.9.1

I was hoping that Mavericks 10.9.1 would solve my "Disk Not Ejected Properly" problem that started with Mavericks. No such luck. Are others having this problem?

Notes-OTHER, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Yes, this is continuing for me as well. I went through th suggestion of SMC and NVRAM reset to no avail. I even thought reformatting the external drive might be worth a try and that did not help either. This is highly annoying as it is my external Time Machine drive.

I too suffer from this with my Western Digital 3+3 Gb raid Thunderbolt drive. Every time the machine wakes from sleep, it tells me the drive was not ejected properly and it has dissapeared from Finder. The only way to get it back is to unplug it and plug it back in again.

More info - I have installed Jettison to try and cure this but it is the same.

More info - This only happens when I am running VMWare Fusion when the machine goes to sleep.

Anyone any ideas?

Many thanks for the suggestion which I have tried. At first I thought it had solved the problem but I'm afraid it has not. When my machine went to sleep this morning, the Thunderbolt drive was not ejected and so just hung. When I woke up the machine again, the drive was not there and had to be unplugged and plugged back in again to be seen.

I have even tried 'jettison' but that does not help either.

Any more ideas are most welcom.

As GrandSport says, it was never a problem until Mavericks - I suppose I could always go back to mountain Lion !!

I rechecked the box and it seemed to fix a different problem - UPS clicking. Turns out my Thunderbolt TM was disconnected for several days. So I have again unchecked and am hoping to come back to some semblance of normalcy. There are other discussions about the new chip's different energy levels and the altered choices in "energy saver" settings; and what seems to go wrong related to "sleep" or something like it.

I am surprised that Apple doesn't have a clear instruction page on sleep, energy saver settings, and how its Mavericks computers interact or may interact with the OS and its sleep options (available and hidden/inherent). While I had heard rumors that 10.9.2 would fix the external hard drive problem, I am seriously beginning to doubt it.

This is surprising as Time Machine - built in by Apple -- all but requires and external hard drive. Apple doesn't really make an external hard drive appropriate for most TMs. The LaCie 2Big 6 Thunderbolt that I use is sold through the Apple store, so, though a 3rd party device, Apple seems to be suggesting that it is compatible. Why can't Apple, until it fixes the OS, tell all of us who use an external HD for TM along with a new computer running Mavericks how to do it -- without the HD ejecting impropertly or disappearing and TM simply not backing up!! -- how to do so. I.e., tell us how to use Apple's product as intended.

Crowd-sourcing is well and good, but at Apple's prices, it is really unfair to wait for thousands of discussants to beat their heads against Apple's wall of silence, hoping to psych out Apple's 'missing instructions." Yes - there are instructions for "energy saver" settings, but they simply fail to deal with the fundamental issue of which setting makes it possible for TM to operate without needing constant attention (like turning on and off to make OS refind the HD).

I could not agree more.

I have bought - from the Apple store - A Western Digit 6TB drive, arranged as 3TB + 3TB in a mirrored raid config, just in case one of the drives dies. The drive works great and until Mavericks came along it performed perfectly. Now, every time my MacBook Pro sleeps, the disc is left hanging and I have to un plug it and plug it back in again to get it to be seen by the computer and start TM working again.

I am thinking of going back to Mountain Lion to fix this problem.

We, the buying public, who keep Apple in business, are drawn into buying the latest and greatest tech stuff such as thunderbolt drives because they are the very best and fastest you can get and for what......to be landed with problems.

This is rubbish for products of this price and quality when will Apple get this sorted.

I am having the same issues with my new (late 2013) Mac Pro randomly (usually, but not always, when the Mac Pro is asleep) ejecting my Drobo 5D. The problem occurs with either a Thunderbolt or USB3 connection. Interestingly enough, it does not occur on my MacBook Pro laptop (also running 10.9.1.) It also does not occur with my 2TB LaCie Little Big Disk, also connected via Thunderbolt to either computer. Oh, and yes I have the Energy Saver option to "put hard drive to sleep when possible" option disabled.

Thanks to photopulse for the suggestion of" Did you try to uncheck the box "put hard drive to sleep when possible" in the OS energy saver setting?"

I was mistaken when I thought it fixed the problem. Like edmo117, the change worked for a few days

It is dissapointing that this certainly appears to be a real issue and that Apple has not addressed this to. As longtimeuser stated, maybe this is not the venue - but it should be.

I don't understand why but, fingers crossed, the problem has gone away now with my MacBook Pro.

I know it is a radical solution but I was having problems with it running slow. I tried all the usual things and then took it to the Apple repair people, told them that I suspected the HDD was suspect so they tested it for a couple of days and told me there was nothing wrong with it !!

The machine was running very slow, especially when connected to the thunderbolt display, and drives. I therefore took the drastic step of replacing the MBP HDD with a 960GB SSD to see if this would solve my speed issue. WOW.......it certainly did.

I can recommend this although it cost about £350 it is well worth it. Crucial M500 960GB.

It now runs better, faster and as a by-product, I have not seen the disc not ejected message since I made the change.

Hope this helps someone else out there, not easy, not elegant, but it made one heck of a difference!!

With 10.9.2 I was getting a lot of "Disk Ejected Improperly" pop ups for my WD drives, even when they were on and showing in the finder. WD tech support said to try replacing the old firewire cables with brand new cables between my Mac Pro and the drives using an Apple firewire to thunderbolt adapter. I did this (Belkin cable) and I have not seen a "Disk Ejected Improperly" popup since.
