Error 112

My time machine stopped backing up about a couple of months ago and displaying this error message:

Time machine couldn't complete backup to "MST time capsule".

The backup disk image “/Volumes/MST Time Capsule/Mark Sandby-Thomas’ Computer.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error 112).

I started having problems initially when I turned the time capsule off. An update to airport utility then seemed to fix it but it then started up again for no discernible reason. The light on the front of the capsule is green and it appears in the shared section of finder but I cannot enter it or get any data from it as it can't be accessed.

In the time machine preference panel, 2 disks images appear with the same name appear. Both say "none" after oldest back up.I hoped by stopping using one, it might solve the problem but it just generated a different error message (6584)

The problem is with both my laptop and my imac.

Should I just do a manual reset as suggested for some other problems? If I do, will I then have to change the name of the capsule and will this affect the data that it is on it already?

You can have several issues at once here.

The 6584 error has to do with corruption of the sparsebundle.

The 112 error is usually just error 1, and it is the same as a number of errors that exist with the TC and network bugs to Mountain Lion or Mavericks.

What OS is on the computer btw?? What model TC and how old??

Let me suggest you do in fact factory reset.

Change all the names in the TC to short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. It helps.

See C9 for reasons.

Look at C17 for your 112 error.

Your 6584 error you need to verify the backups.

See A5

A factory reset will not harm any backups.. changing the names of the TC and wireless will not harm the backups.. do not change the hard disk name.. unless it is really odd.. but Apple used data by default for long long time.

You will need to reset TM to the new TC name.. See A4.

TM will still be able to use its backups.. unless the 6584 error means they are really corrupted.. if that is the case you will have no choice but to delete or erase the TC and start afresh.

All of the numbers refer to the great work done by late pondini..
