Q: Boot Camp doesn't work after having created a new partition in OS X

Hello,

I'm running OS X 10.8.5 and Windows 7 x64 Pro.

After properly setting up Boot Camp to dual-boot Windows on my MacBook Pro,

I opened Disk Utility, reduced the size of my OS X parition from 370GB to 270GB, and created a new partition (called "D", in Windows NT (NTFS) format) in the unallocated space.  Here's how it looks now:

Captura de pantalla 2013-12-18 a la(s) 13.15.11.png

Whilst OS X boots just fine, the Boot Camp partition now no longer shows up in the Startup Manager, though it does in the Startup Disk prefPane.  If I do attempt to boot into Boot Camp, I receive the following message on a black screen:

No bootable device --- insert boot disk and press any key

Reading this post, I have try to do what Christopher Murphy said, but my messages at the  command line where different:

Christopher Murphy, Must I do the same as you said to Scotch_Brawth

Mayby if I delete disc D with Disk Utility and resize the mac one, boot camp works again.

Thank you very much

    0. Make sure you have a backup.

    1. Did you try the link in the other article? (The Number88 link).

    2. fdisk has an interactive mode fdisk -e /dev/disk0 that can be used to edit a specific entry (use man fdisk in a separate terminal window, if necessary).

    3. You may be hitting your D: which does not have an OS. More than likely (as supported by your Disk Utility output and the GPT output) the following partition is where your Windows installation is

    738492416  238280704      5  GPT part - EBD0A0A2-B9E5-4433-87C0-68B6B72699C7

    4. Can you boot Windows if you change partition #4 in fdisk -e /dev/disk0 to be this start/size combination and marking it as bootable (see the description of flag and edit commands under man fdisk).

    5. The disk D: can be tackled once Windows is marked bootable.

    From http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5639 ...

"How can a Windows partition be resized after Windows is installed?

You need to delete the Windows partition using the Boot Camp Assistant, and start over to change the size of the Windows partition. Back up your important Windows files first."

Can you post the output of "sudo gpt -r -vv show disk0" and sudo fdisk /dev/disk0, please, using the currently working setup? It will help other posters, who may be in a similar situation.

    PS: Thanks!
