iPhoto 6 shows no devices when camera connected to MacBook pro

Trying to load images into a relative's MacBook Pro (OS10.6.8), which still has iPhoto 6 on it. Used the same Canon and iPhoto 6 to load images into the same MacBook Pro a few weeks ago, but now nothing happens when I try to connect. If I go to "Devices," there is not one device listed. Have no idea what my next move is and don't want to load a new iPhoto into someone else's old machine if I can avoid doing so.

As far as I know the camera must be mounted for it to be seen in iPhoto. Until you can get that sorted I would ignore the iPhoto problem.

Can you see any other type, say USB pendrive if it is plugged in. If the pen drive works perhaps it is the Cable or Camera. If the Pendrive fails to mount I would do a PRAM and SMC reset, do one of those anyway.
