My last suggestion is to try a wired keyboard. I've got nothing else sorry.

OK thanks Mike, I'm stumped. I am using a USB keyboard. The only thing I can think of that it's a later keyboard from a 27" iMac already in use. The wireless mouse is recognized.

If there's a firmware password it may not allow booting into Single-User mode.
