Macbook Pro (mid-2010) crashes randomly, sometimes beeps three times, sometimes restarts

I have a Macbook Pro 15" mid-2010 running Mavericks.

For no apparent reason my macbook has recently started crashing suddenly. Either it freezes and I have to manually shut down, or goes to black, or the screen goes black whilst the computer is still on or it restarts and tells me there's been a problem.

Normally when I try to turn it on straight after I will get three beeps and the computer won't turn on. I normally have to wait a while until it will turn on normally again.

This is not a RAM issue. I previously thought it was, due to the three beeps but I replaced the RAM entirely and am still having the same problem.

Sometimes the machine will run for hours, sometimes minutes...

...and I just don't know what to do 😟

Any help would be very very very greatly appreciated

Thanks

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Likely related to http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4088. May have to check for service options.

Hey

This has recently happened to me as well using the new OS after having the machine serviced with a new SSHD and Apple approved RAM. However, my mac only restarted when using MS word. I could watch movies, tv series or browse the web for hours and no crashes and just 10 mins on MS Word and it would restart.

After going back and forth with the repair team here is what they found:

Mid 2010 MacBooks have 2 GPUs, NVIDIA and Intel. Some programs, most notably MS WORD 2011 and 2016 force the mac to switch between the two very rapidly and does not lock any of them. This causes the mac to have a kernel "meltdown", resulting in either black screen, a freeze or a complete restart.

The solution is to install a program called GfxCardStatus that forces the MacBooK Pro to keep to one GPU only, whichever program it uses.

It really surprises me that Apple hasn't provided this answer on any of its forums or support. Leaving the issue to be solved on Microsoft's side. Sure, it is a bug on MS Office that causes the Mac to do this. But this is also because of Apple's MacBook's have 2 GPU's just for the sake of it.

Hope it helps.
