Sanyo Katana Cell Phone

Just purchased Sanyo Katana and Bluetooth adapter. I can pair the devices but unsuccessful in transferring data (images and music). Am I attempting the impossible? I would like to load ringers and pix but not sure it is compatible with Mac.

Is there software obtainable to get this done/

Any help will be most appreciated.

I followed the Bluetooth steps in the help menu. It work ok, but I am unable to get the phone to see ringers etc for any file transfers or uploading. This is new to me, as my Sanyo VI2300 does not have Bluetooth capabilities. I also want to use it as a modem for my laptop, but have been unsuccessful so far.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to do much in trying to work around the issue, as I have had other pressing issues outside of this one, which explains why I have not responded to your posting.

Hae you had any progress since your posting?

I just spent an hour or so on the phone with Sprint. Basically, the $130 BlueTooth phone doen't do anything I was told it can do, except work with a BlueTooth headset.

I was able to pair it easily with the Mac, and can send contacts TO the Mac, which useless, as all of my contacts are already on the Mac, but NOT to the phone.

Also, you can't send a photo from the phone (if you take one with the phone camera) to the Mac, only the other way, which is also useless to me - why take a photo and send it to a device with a 1/2 inch screen to look at it?!

I also was told I could send .MP3s, but that doesn't work either...

Its really a piece of crap... I may take it back...

At present I know of no way to transfer data to your Katana except for vCards. As far as I've been able to determine, Sprint cripples the ability to do this in their phones to force you to subscribe to their services.

Your best hope will be to follow the progress of BitPim and hope that its developers eventually support the Katana.

If you want to download ringers to the phone, you will need to get the audio into a Qualcomm Pure Voice (.qcp) format. Qualcomm has a free utility to do this but it runs only in OS 9 and "support for newer Mac operating systems is not planned." Download it here.

Most of what I've learned about my Katana I read on the Sprint User's forum.

Sprint's strategy seems to be if you want to transfer data between your phone and your computer, they want you to pay them for it. I hope that my contract with them runs out as soon as an iPhone is announced (and that Cingular works in my area, if they in fact turn out to be the carrier).

Mark, it is easy to send your Address Book contacts to the Katana via BT. To do this make sure you've paired the Katana and your Mac. Then open your Address Book and export a vCard. Then go to your Bluetooth menulet and choose "Send file...".

You have to send your contacts one at a time. It would make sense to export your entire address book into one big vCard file and import it all at once to your Katana. Unfortunately that doesn't work.

As far as I can tell this is the only useful thing you can do with BT on the Katana, and the headset as you pointed out. You can't, for instance, send a picture or ringtone to the phone, perfectly formatted as it may be. This seems less a fault of the byzantine Bluetooth protocol as it is with Sprint's apparent desire to cripple this otherwise excellent phone's capabilities.

hello all,

just joined the forum. i confess to being a techno-klutz. so here's my query:

just bought a sprint katana - not too sure if i'm liking just yet - and am in need of the software download for the motorola bluetooth pc850 for mac. the cd/software/driver is for microsoft windows.

been wandering around and around using "search" and not having any luck.
i would appreciate hearing from someone else recently purchased the same phone & bluetooth device and how they managed to get their phone, the bluetooth device & laptop to work together.
