Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

I can't log into my computer because i don't know the desktop admin's password, pls help. It lets me log in as a guest user but I don't the password for the guest user either.

My teen son changed all the settings on our family computer and now I cannot log itno my computer because he has changed all the settings and passwords.

Pls help.

Forgot Your Account Password


For Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks


Boot to the Recovery HD:


Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.


When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.

Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow

instructions in the dialog window that will appear.

For Snow Leopard and earlier with installer DVD

I suggest you create a managed account for your son wherein he cannot make such changes without the admin password. I would change your admin password and not reveal it to him or anyone else.

The Guest user is a read-only account. It only allows access to the Shared folder.


Open Users & Groups preferences, click on the lock and authenticate, select the account you wish to remove, then click on the Delete [-] button at the bottom of the list. Be sure to select the Immediate delete option if asked.


Re-configure your son's account as a Managed account. You can then use Parental Controls to restrict his access only to what you approve. Be sure you do not give him access to System Preferences.
