I am trying to save my weekly keynote presentations as templates, so that I can come back to them. I have a background image and about 50-60 slides, but each time I save as a template the background image disappears, and I am sent back to an apple proprietary template.
There is no such thing as templates in Keynote, what you would use is themes.
There are some problems with saving and applying themes in the current version of Keynote.

I don't see the point in doing this, and it wont work as you want it to.
Themes are used to either have a single object on every slide in a presentation or to create an over all design for a presentation that will be applied to existing slides, Apple calls this feature; themes.
if you need to alter existing presentations; make a duplicate and store this somewhere safe so you can change them to suite as necessary.
Thank you for that. Yes you are right, I did mean themes, but the problem still exists, if I open Keynote and choose My Themes I have six themes all completely black, with none of the pictures that I regularly use as backgrounds saved under the different Themes
Is there any way that I can save background images to My Themes?
I would use Keynote 5.3 if you have it, otherwise buy it on ebay as iWork 09. Maybe in a year Keynote 6 will be usable.
