Locate previous owner of lost iphone 5c

Hello,

I have found an iphone 5c with a passcode lock. I'm trying to get it back to the original owner but I have no way of contacting them.

Is there anyway I could get this iphone back to them?

I'm thinking about wiping the phone and hopefully on the activation lock screen it will show me their Apple ID. And I could use this to contact them. But I'm not sure if this will work, and thought I would ask before doing anything drastic like this.

Does the activation lock screen show the Apple ID after wiping?
