Does the latest MAcBook Pro support using IR remote?

Thanks for the question. The new MacBook Pro with Retina display does not include an infrared receiver. A quick way to confirm would be to do the following:

OS X Mavericks: If your Apple Remote isn’t working

Turn on IR reception

1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Security & Privacy, click General, then click Advanced.

2. Deselect “Disable remote control infrared receiver.”

Note: If you don’t see this option, your computer may not have a built-in IR receiver.

MBPr 15" Late 2013 does not have an IR receiver.

Are their any alternatives?

If you have an iPad or iPod Touch, you could use the "Remote" app from Apple to control iTunes or Apple TV. If you need a remote for Keynote, you can use the iOS Keynote app, which has a remote function built in. In either case, you need to have both devices on the same wireless network (which could be, in fact, an ad hoc one you make).

This is exactly what I needed: to stream a movie from my Macbook to my Apple TV (using QuickTime) and still be able to pause/play the movie...
