How can I install the VLC media player on OS X Mavericks

Download it from VideoLAN's website, double-click the downloaded dmg file to expand it, then drag the application from the window to your Applications folder. There should be an alias to the Applications folder right on the mounted dmg, so you can just drag it into the Applications folder alias in the same window.

No problem downloading it...been doing that for at least 10 years.

However, when I try to play any movies on it on my OS 10.9.4 Mavericks iMac, I get great, full sound

but instead of the crystal clear picture I've gotten with previous OS X systems, all I get is an obnoxious

white window. Any & all suggestions on how to fix this will be greatly appreciated, & thanks in advance.
