VIP folder doesn't sync deleted emails

I have just a couple email addresses that I have tagged as "VIP" which appear in the "VIP" folder in my iPhone mail. This works fine except that when I delete those emails elsewhere, either in another folder on my phone or directly from my email server, they still appear in the VIP folder until I manually delete them there. Anyone else experience this?
