Alternating between 5s as a cellphone and 5s as an iPod touch

I bought my wife a T-Mobile unlocked iPhone 5s for Christmas. Before we decide on which carrier to use (T-Mobile or AT&T), we'd like to just start out using it as an iPod Touch. We do plan to activate it with a cellular plan (month to month), just not immediately.

If I understand the process, we'll first need to leave the SIM in and activate it with T-Mobile, but without actually signing up for a service plan. If we decide to go with AT&T, we'd first need to get and install an AT&T SIM. Then we'd activate the phone with AT&T, again not subscribing to a cellular plan until we're actually ready to use the 5s as a phone. Is this correct?

I'm curious about all this because there'll be times when we won't be using the phone for a month or two at a time. In these cases, we'd like to be able to still use the 5s as an iPod, without paying a carrier, just by allowing the month-to-month plan to lapse.

No, I bought the unlocked 5s directly from Apple. Because it is GSM technology and unlocked, I can use it either with T-Mobile or AT&T. Both companies have unbundled their phones from their cellular service, so that you can bring your own phone and pay month-to-month without a contract (just for the service alone and not the phone).

I'm trying to figure out if I need to activate the 5s with a carrier prior to being able use it as a standalone iPod. Also, whether I can activate the phone with a carrier without actually signing up for cellular service.

I already stated if you activate the phone you will need a service plan.

In order to use the phone you need to activate the phone even if using as a ipod.

Sorry, Razmee. When you said I needed a two-year contract with AT&T, I thought you had misunderstood my situation.

So, when I receive the iPhone from Apple with the T-Mobile SIM installed, I must contact T-Mobile and somehow arrange for them to "activate" the phone. In order for them to do this, I'll need to pay them for service, correct? (Perhaps only for a month, since they sell month-by-month service).

There's no way to use the iPhone as a iPod, without paying a carrier to activate it with cellular service, right?

You need to check out AT&T and T-Mobile websites. There is no longer a requirement for a contract if you own your own unlocked phone. They provide their SIM (AT&T free, T-Mobile $10), then you select your service plan (no contract required). I got the T-Mobile SIM from Apple because it was free...no $10 charge, and T-Mobile's plan is cheaper. If I don't like their service, after a month I'll get the free AT&T SIM, activate on their network, and compare their service.
