Autocorrect is trying to make me look like I failed ninth-grade English.

It's one thing when autocorrect "corrects" a really uncommon word to a more common one, or a proper name to the closest possible dictionary word, but this is getting a little ridiculous. Autocorrect is trying to "correct" the right use of a word with the wrong one:

As your ninth-grade English teacher would undoubtedly tell you, the correct word usage in that sentence is "their."

There exists literally no way of reading the above sentence in which the use of the word "there" makes the slightest bit of sense.

And this isn't the only example; both Mavericks and my iPhone have tried to correct the word "you're" (which I'm correctly using to substitute for "you are") to "your."

Why is autocorrect trying to make me look like I never learned anything in ninth-grade English? (That's unpossible!)

I share your sense of annoyance at this very obvious stupidity but if you spend any time at all reading these threads, you'll soon realise that what some have called the "Return to Illiteracy" is proceeding apace.

Until the 19th century most people did not know how to read and write. Then there was a period of education for all and for a while, most people did know how to read and write, and so communicate with one another.

Now there's a noticeable falling-off in the standard of people's ability to communicate. Some think this is intentional. It also appears to have become a problem within large corporations like Apple, where the employees are no longer sure what's right and what's wrong.

Look at all the "there" and "their"s in these threads; the misplaced or missing apostrophes; and so on. Sometimes it's almost impossible to understand what the poster is trying to say!

I would tend to look at Education systems around the world and their inability to train our young (with the exception of China). These young people go on to develop such annoying little demons such as 'Auto-Correct'. Even just the difference in spelling between Western Countries is annoying. No localis(z)ation available.

Which is why I simply went to System Preferences > Keyboard > Text and unchecked 'Correct Spelling Automatically' and instead do a manual spell-check of documents. I don't believe it will ever be perfect for everybody. iOS is even worse!

The USA ranks 49th in literacy worldwide, the UK is 48th, neither of them reach a standard worth aspiring to (The US has always been poor, but the UK has declined considerably) China is 99th, room for improvement.

Scandinavia shows well, shame on us for the mediocre placing.

Thanks for that. So, my native Australia by far outranks Tom's England both in literacy and Cricket. Good to see! 😉

It's a sad indictment on modern society, though. The evidence is their to sea.
