Can time machine back up both my mac HD as well as an external hard drive?

As long as the external drive is connected to the computer, Time Machine can back it up. When you set up Time Machine in System Preferences, click the Options button to make sure the external drive is not excluded. If it is, select it and use the minus sign to remove it.
