Mail isn't syncing well with gmail. what's going on!?

For the last week or so, mail hasn't been syncing well with gmail. I know I have new emails coming in because I see them on my phone but they are not showing up in mail on my desktop. Is there something wrong with the mail program? HELP. This is driving me nuts. I keep having to quit mail, restart my computer and then it works.
