Q: Crashes/reboots/restarts while on sleep

This thread is exclusive to people who have spontaneous crashes/reboots/restarts while their Mac is in sleep. (this is usually connected to having a USB external hard drive plugged in the computer while on sleep)

In simple words, you are experiencing this problem:

1) You put your Mac to sleep

2) You return to it after some time and you find it on.

3) On screen you find this error message "Your computer restarted because of a problem." or similar, and in the report of the error message the Event is "Sleep Wake Failure" or similar.

If your Mac does not wake from sleep this is NOT the thread for you, please don’t write here.

If your Mac is experiencing black screens and freezes while waking up from sleep this is NOT the thread for you, please don’t write here.

This thread is a continuation to the “New rMBP sleep/wake failure crashes” thread.

I’m trying to better understand this problem. Allow me to ask you some questions. After you answer the first 5 question, feel free to write freely in this thread. (as longs as you are pertinent to this issue)

Please answer this questions carefully. If we get enough people to answer, I will personally slap this thread on the face of every Apple employee I can find, so they will have to stop saying  "we never heard of this issue" and we can get a quick fix or a quick replacement if this is indeed an hardware issue.

PLEASE ANWSER THIS QUESTIONS BEFORE WRITING IN THIS THREAD FOR THE FIRST TIME

I suggest you copy and paste the questions below in your reply, and replace the text ANSWER with your answer.

Update. My system (new Macbook Pro, OS 10.9.1) had been crashing every night. After reading the discussion I disconnected my WD external drive at bedtime starting 26th December. Not a single crash since, until inevitably I forgot and sure enough it crashed again. I haven't touched the PowerNap settings, so for my machine the WD drive seems to be the confirmed cause.

I still don't know how to resolve this though. Anyone had any joy from contacting WD? Apple don't seem very engaged with the issue.

I've contacted WD twice. They said that they will look into it. Apple basically said the same thing.

The only thing that we can do right now is wait, and remind everybody to send a bug report to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/

    I have a MBA late 2013.  11".

I have noticed the problem since I got the machine in August 2013 (ML, then Mavericks)

    No replacement from Apple

External drive is WD.  It is used solely as the time capsule backup drive.   It does not seem to crash when WD is disconnected (for example, when I'm traveling)

I disabled Power Nap and the crash/reboot problem seems to have stopped entirely

Don't know if it is relevant but from the crash dump concole log I always seem to get:

"Power Source:    0 samples on Battery, 0 samples on AC, 26 samples Unknown" near the top of the log (not going to post the entire log !!!

My MacBook has always been closed with no mains adapter when the crash occurs but it seems strange that it cannot establish the power source.  Maybe there is an explanation but I don't understand enough system internals to know what exactly is going on here.

I have the same issue with a mid 2011 iMac 27 since months. There is a iomega USB portable drive connected when the Sleep Wake Failure happens. Always! When I remove the drive it never happened during the last months since Mavericks. Always when I connect the disk it happens practically immediatly. And yes, I use the drive to make a backup.

So, I started to live with it. Once a week I make this backup with the "old" backup program from Apple. I do this in addition to Time Machine. After the backup I remove the drive and everything's fine.

I know there are users that don't have anything connected and still have this issue, but for me the solution is absolutely clear.

Here are my answers to the questions:

    1. Which Mac do you have? (If you have this issue with multiple machines, list them here)

    ANSWER: iMac - model: iMac12,2      1 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 CPU: 4 cores,           8 GB RAM

    2. When did the problem start? If you had Mountain Lion installed on this machine, did the problem start when you updated to Mavericks?

    ANSWER: Yes

    3. Did you have your Mac replaced from Apple because of this issue? If yes, does the new machine still have the problem?

    ANSWER: No

    4. Does your machine crash/reboot while on sleep only if you have an external hard drive connected?

ANSWER: Exclusively when the iomega USB drive is physically connected.

    5. Does your machine crash/reboot even if you uncheck "Enable Power Nap" in Preferences, Energy Saver? (before answering this, check that you have updated OS X to 10.9.1 and that you have unchecked Power Nap in both the Battery and Power Adapter tabs in Energy Saver)

ANSWER: Never tried it. I don't have the option and don't know why.

    OPTIONAL QUESTIONS

    6. Do you have an external hard drive connected via USB? If yes, write the manufacturer name and model name of the drive. (example: Western Digital My Book)

ANSWER: Yes definitely. iomega USB 1T portabel drive: eGo

    7. Do you have a network connected drive? (like Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to an AirPort Extreme, or a NAS)

ANSWER: No but I have a Pegasus R4 Promise system connected on the Thunderbolt interface

    8. Do you have Time Machine Enabled?

ANSWER: Yes, I use it with the Pegasus system

    9. Do you have Crashplan installed?

    ANSWER: No

    10. How much time does it usually take for the first crash/reboot to happen, after you put the computer on sleep?

ANSWER: I am not sure but short (in the order of minutes). But is happens in my case when I wake the computer and the backup program is working. I've scheduled this to happen at night once a week.

    11. If you have a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina, do you have discrete graphics in it? (In other words: do you have an NVIDIA GPU? If you don't know this, go into the menu bar, click the apple icon, click About This Mac, Click More Info, in Graphics you should find written “NVIDIA GeForce”.)

    ANSWER: iMac 27

Interestingly I had a possibly related issue with my old mid-2009 MBP: After updating to Mavericks, the external HD would suddenly spin up in standby mode. No other bugs, so back then this was just a nuisance. Maybe Mavericks contains a bug that manifests differently on different machines?

I do not have the answer to he Sleep Wake Failure issue, but I can summarize some of the issues that are not causing the problem

    1) It is not confined to the MacBook Pro: my Late 2012 iMac started daily frequent random re-boots with 10.9.0. However, the issue has not affected my 2011 MacBook Air, 2009 iMac, or older Intel Mac minis, all with Mavericks installed.

    2) The reboot issue is not resolved by disconnecting peripherals (external drives, printers, USB adapters, etc).

    3) The reboot issue is not resolved by reinstalling System Software, resetting the PRAM, or resetting the SMC.

    4) The reboot issue is not resolved by disabling any of the Energy Saver preferences, including Power Nap.

Two months worth of trouble shooting combinations has not resolved the problem.

Well, that fixes it for me and a few others. Maybe your problem is actually a different one?

Did anybody with deeper insight try to analyze the crash logs to check whether there is a common pattern?

Disconnecting the WD USB drive and turning off powernap fixes sleep/wake issue for me.

Also note: I rarely close my laptop lid, but when I do and USB drive is connected, I can get the sleep wake failure reboot. But it doesn't happen every time. I have a new MBP 15" from November 2013.

    3. Did you have your Mac replaced from Apple because of this issue? If yes, does the new machine still have the problem?

MAC WAS NOT REPLACED.  WENT TO A "GENIUS" AND THEY RESET MY SCREENSAVER. LOL.

    4. Does your machine crash/reboot while on sleep only if you have an external hard drive connected?

    YES

    9. Do you have Crashplan installed?

    NO

    10. How much time does it usually take for the first crash/reboot to happen, after you put the computer on sleep?

DEPENDS.  USUALLY ABOUT 5 MINUTES MAYBE

MINE SAYS - Graphics  Intel Iris Pro 1024 MB

I really thought they would have this figured out by now.  I do not believe it is an exclusive problem with WD drives, as I thought there were earlier reports of other drives having the problem.  I have a different drive manufacturer, I will try it.

Everyone - try Jettison by St. Clair Software on the Mac App Store ($1.99 or so).

It dismounts all external drives automatically whenever the computer goes to sleep, including USB drives, networks shares, Time Capsules, etc.  I have not had a single sleep/wake failure crash since I started using it three days ago.

Jettison didn't prevent the crashes for me. Only setting hibernatemode to 25 did, despite getting the error that external disk were not disconnected properly when waking up from sleep.

But I'm curious, I'm the only one that setting "sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 25" in the terminal prevented the crash/reboot while sleeping with external usb HDD attached?
