redeemed itunes gift card but still asks for credit card for every purchase

I recently redeemed a gift card on my IPHONE. I have made several purchases but every time it asks for my credit card and charges my credit card. I tried to redeem again thinking i did something wrong and it says already redeemed. How do I use the balance on the gift card or did I just get burnt on $50 bucks
