Apple USB keyboard does not connect to 13 Macbook Retina

I bought a new 13 Macbook Retina over the weekend. I have a USB keyboard that I have been using for months with a 15" Macbook Pro (early 2011). They keyboard will not connect unless I plug it in with a thumb drive connected to the keyboard. I am 100% certain its an issue with the laptop and not the keyboard. I tested it with the old laptop and it works just fine. My wife has the same 13 Macbook retina and it does the same thing. So I'm guessing its either a laptop or Mavericks issue. The EFI update for the built-in keyboard has been installed FYI.

Thanks!
