Q: Cannot move location pins or manage my places

Hi,

Using iPhoto 9.5.1 (902.17)

I don't know when this happened, but yesterday I wanted to finally organize all my pictures and also make sure they had a location (GEO tag). But when I try to add a location to a picture I do not have the option to move the pin around. No matter how I click on the pin it stays red. So first question is:

1:     Why can I not move the pin around in the small map area? It stays red. I have tried under different users on my MAC but it is not working anywhere.

Then I thought I might be able to do something under the menu option "Manage my places" (translated from the danish version so I hope it is correct). But when I click the menu nothing happens. I do not get a new window with my places. The other option in that menu is to "Manage my keywords" and that will open just fine in a new window.

2:     Why can I not open the "Manage my places" window?

This is rather frustrating, and I have read a lot on the internet about location problems. But I have not found anything covering the above to mentioned problems a once. I hope someone out there has a clue :-)

    Hi LarryHN,

Thanks for your reply. It was already set to "automatic" and I can type a location and get a red pin, but I cannot move the pin (making it yellow) to a more precise location :-(

Try repair permissions with Disk Utility.

    Hi Terence,

I have now repaired the persmissions with Disk Utility. No effect on my problems. Still cannot move a pin (or make it yellow) or open "manage my places".

Switch to another User acccount and create a library there. Add a few pics. Does it work there?

Okay now I tried to create a new account and create a new library there. Put in a picture in iPhoto, but still no luck. Same symptoms again.

I also tried my wifes account, and same problems in iPhoto.

    Anyway - merry christmas :-)

    Back up and try reinstall:

    To re-install iPhoto

    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)

    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.

For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:

2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.

2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type

    /var/db/receipts/

    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at

    /private/var/db/receipts

A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.

    3. Re-install.

If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.

If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.

*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

Thank you very much for your time Terence, but after trying all of the above I was getting nowhere.

I got so frustrated, that I decieded to make a clean install of my Macbook. I copied the things i needed, and wiped the harddrive. Re-installing Mavericks and downloading iPhoto again. So now I had a completely new untouched operating system (did not move my backed up files back yet) and a fresh iPhoto. Found a few pics to put in and was expecting a miracle. The miracle did not come... Still the same!

Even more frustrated now I started thinking that I was doing something wrong. But what? Then comes the most annoying experience for a long time... I connected my old mouse to use for something else, and voila, using the mouse I was able to take the pin (holding the left mouse button pressed) and then move it around... Then I learnt that when using the touchpad I would have to use three fingers to move the pin   (it never turned yellow though).

Thanks for your time anyway and have a happy new year

I’m not sure if this will help you but I seemed to experience the same problem with not being able to move the pin and just staying red.

The same problem happens to me if I try to drag the pin in the map under ‘Places’. However, if you goto ‘Events” instead, you should be able to drag the pin in the small map window in the bottom right corner, which will be revealed when you click on info (which you probably already know). You should also be able to rename it there.

It seems you've been very thorough already and so you’ve probably tried this already, it seems too easy of an answer with all your previous investigation! Anyway, maybe it will help you! Good luck.

    (I use iPhoto '11 9.5.1 and OS X Mavericks 10.9.1.)

    Hi chellyman,

It is working for me and I am doing it just like you described it. But the pin does not turn yellow. I don't need it to turn yellow, but I am curious if it is doing so in your iPhoto?

I still have another problem though and that is I cannot manage my places. When I click the menu "Window" and then choose "Manage places" nothing happens. I do not get a pop-up window or anything. Any suggestion there?

I finally made it work again! I used the software "iPhoto Library Manager" to rebuild my library and voila - I can now again open "Manage my places"

    @strandlyst,

As I am preparing to migrate from OS X Lion to OS X Mavericks and from iPhoto 9.4.3 to 9.5.1, I was hoping not to find discussions like this one.  My iPhoto Library is huge (397 GB), restoring from Time Machine doesn't work ("permission problem", well documented in this and other forums), and restoring from a disk image that I make weekly requires creating space on the harddisk by removing the mobile backups that Time Machine makes.  So using iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the library will be a real pain.

    @Larry, @Terrence,

Did either of you encounter similar problems as strandlyst when upgrading to iPhoto 9.5.1?

    Regards,

    Richrd

I do not use "manage my places" - I have a GPS enabled camera so my photos are imported with Lat/Long in the EXIF
