Q: Cannot move location pins or manage my places

Hi,

Using iPhoto 9.5.1 (902.17)

I don't know when this happened, but yesterday I wanted to finally organize all my pictures and also make sure they had a location (GEO tag). But when I try to add a location to a picture I do not have the option to move the pin around. No matter how I click on the pin it stays red. So first question is:

1:     Why can I not move the pin around in the small map area? It stays red. I have tried under different users on my MAC but it is not working anywhere.

Then I thought I might be able to do something under the menu option "Manage my places" (translated from the danish version so I hope it is correct). But when I click the menu nothing happens. I do not get a new window with my places. The other option in that menu is to "Manage my keywords" and that will open just fine in a new window.

2:     Why can I not open the "Manage my places" window?

This is rather frustrating, and I have read a lot on the internet about location problems. But I have not found anything covering the above to mentioned problems a once. I hope someone out there has a clue :-)

    @strandlyst,

    As I am preparing to migrate from OS X Lion to OS X Mavericks and from iPhoto 9.4.3 to 9.5.1, I was hoping not to find discussions like this one.  My iPhoto Library is huge (397 GB), restoring from Time Machine doesn't work ("permission problem", well documented in this and other forums), and restoring from a disk image that I make weekly requires creating space on the harddisk by removing the mobile backups that Time Machine makes.  So using iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the library will be a real pain.

    Hello Richard,

    What problem do you actually have at the moment? Did you try the migration and something went wrong or are you still preparing? Anyhow I must say I have enjoyed using iPhoto Library Manager. It is very simple and did everything as expected. But I can see how it will take a long time with a huge library like yours.

    I hope you find a solution :-)

    @strandlyst,

    As I wrote, I am preparing.  As you might surmise from all the threads about the "overlapping places" problem, one change in the underlying model of places in iPhoto -- or in the map source, for that matter! -- can be disasterous.  Several times I have had no choice but to restore the library from a weekly copy when a new place accidentally "gobbled up" lots of existing ones.  Up to now, I have been the immediate cause of the disaster, although, obvious, Apple is unquestionably the root cause.  Recovering won't be so easy if upgrading iPhoto causes this or similar problems, as restoring from a backup won't be an option.

    I am familiar with iPhoto Library Manager.  Brian Webster make a fine, well designed product that does a better job of converting libraries from one version of iPhoto to another than Apple itself.

    Regards,

    Richard

    Thanks, that did it! Have to remember to go through the right sequence - who knew? You did!
