Q: can i mirror my iMac to my apple tv ?

If you want to mirror your iMac display onto your Apple TV, you need AirPlay Mirroring, which requries OS X Mountain Lion or Mavericks and a Mid 2011 or newer iMac. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404
If your Mac is not supported, you have to use a third-party app like AirParrot.
If you want to use AirParrot, you should be able to use it without a new iMac. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4325??
