FCPX 10.1 Very slow on iMac and lots of spinning beach balls

I have noticed since I have started to use FCPX 10.1 on my Late 2012 iMac (32GB RAM, 680MX Graphics, i7 quad core, thunderbold Arecca Raid) I am getting lots of spinning beach balls and things are generally slower.

I am really hoping Apple thought about people who cannot affored a Mac Pro, and ensure the performance is also good on iMacs, but unfortunately I am seeing a drop in performance compared to 10.0.9.

Has anyone else with an iMac noticed this?

Thanks for the quick reply,

Yea I wasnt sure what would happen when I created a new user. When I did I obviously foiund out that there my old library isnt there. So I didnt have any media to work with. I realized that I am going to have to migrate media that is indeed inside my library but a lot of it is inside a folder on my desktop as well. Then there is the issue of needing to move 1 tb of footage and having all my external drives maxed out. Hopefully there will be another update soon. Thanks-Trav

This slow down seems to be plaguing a lot of people. When you tried the new user, did the application work better?

@Tom,

Comment – Another reason to keep projects outside the home folder.

Question – Why do you think 10.1/10.9 is far faster for some users (me included) and agonizingly slow for others? Wondering whether it's the quantity of events and/or media inside libraries (see AndyNicks's post), where they're stored (as in this thread), something else?

Hope this helps someone sorry this may be lengthy read. I ended up just editing with a slow computer yesterday. It wasnt absolutely horrible once I got to a point where it was lagging less. All my external drives are full and my smallest project I have contains 400gbs of assets so I have no way at the moment to migrate my media to another user, because I have 100 gb left n my internal. I suppose I could just move one of the 10.1 libraries from my current user to the sharred folder and then put them in movies folder of other user but I am in the middle of a project with a deadline and im scared of bouncing that folder around. Also thinking there are problems with the original updated library. If I try to update an old event and library from my backup of 10.9 it will need the media thats in there and I dont have enough space so the different user solution was not an option yesterday.

One Strange characteristic I found that seems it may have helped a little, but difficult to say because I did a few things, was that the main project I am working on, and having problems with, was that about 40 clips I used in the project are h264 clips in my project instead of my converted Apple pro res 422. Then In my browser I had 2 versions of each clip for those as well. The Apple pro res and the h264. I tried relinking all those h264 clips in my browser to pro res ones and it was strange it worked for some and not for others I had to manually find the same clip for about 10 of them and reedit into my timeline. However I have edited with h264 before and never had lagging so it cant be that but that was strange.

I also went ahead and made individual libraries for each project by selecting the events then -File - Move to new Library. Then I deleted the original library and closed all the other libraries. Im sure that this helpped me the most because I noticed a big change after rebooting.

Another thing that was strange was that in 3 of my events before I turned them into libraries I had caution triangles for disconnected media. However in two of them once I selected them to find what was causing it, the thumbnails would start to load and the caution triangles would go away. I relinked all the media in those events.

So far today its much better but still laggy and far from being an upgrade for me. After I wrap this project I am uninstalling and reinstalling buying another raid thunderbolt and migrating every FCPX project and their assets to that drive.

These were some of the characteristics I was experiencing at its worst.

-General lagging all the way around. Lots of hesitation if im editing quickly, at times it will freeze up and miss 3 to 6 moves and try to catch up then really lag. It reminds me of edintg at my film school G3's in 2002.

-When scrubbing quickly, or moving a clip in project by method of click and drag, it will freeze stall momentarily at times and then recover

-Occasional crashes (about 2 an hour)

-If I right click a clip in the time line for reveal in browser I always have to do it twice for it to work

-All thumbnails in my events take a very long time to load and you can hear the computer chugging at times . (My largest event only has just over 1000 clips and some have as little as 50)

Hope this is useful for someone. Hoping for an update soon. -Trav

OK so while struggling on my Mac after the update (Macbook Pro late 2011) I found a few interesting points.

Apple article (Last Modified: Dec 19, 2013) which I had not seen before lists the graphic cards compatible with FCPX 10.1 http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664

the card in my MacBook Pro (Intel HD Graphics 3000) is listed as the minimum requirement. So hopefully the huge slow down should be fixed by Apple soon.

Also another article found on http://fcpx.tv/troubleshooting.htmlmade me realized that I could actually add another (older) version of the app from a backup.

Unfortunately for me my backups are stored off site so I will get the drive tomorrow and copy my previous 10.0.9 (and rename the older app "Final Cut Pro 10.0.9.app"). In the mean time as I received an urgent video to publish by tonight and will only be able to access my backup tomorrow, I got a FCPX 10.0.9 image of the app via Torrents (I am not a fan of torrents but as I paid for the software I decided its fair to get the image... you decide if it's legal or not. Personally I will still replace this version with my backed up one tomorrow).

Oh and last 2 points for next time (also applies for me)...:

  • Before next update, right click on Final Cut Pro.app and create a .zip archive and rename it with the version number. This will allow you to easily revert.
  • If you are on Mavericks, check that in System Preferences/App Store/ all automatic updates are deactivated. For me this was a killer, I tried to update the 1st Mac and when I realized I didn't want to, I opened my other Mac which had unfortunately already automatically updated.

Hopefully this will help some of you who may be suffering after the upgrade.

Good luck to all of you...

I am happy to have found that others have this problem. Not that you all have the problem but that I am not alone with my iMac. I have a late 2012, upgraded all the way, with 24 gigs of ram and this FCPX is killing me. I love the new features but not at the expense of them making the system totally unresponsive. I could have written what TravisDesigns wrote:

The lagging is ridiculous. I really can't edit with this thing. Apple releases another dud that's not ready for primetime. When I first started editing on my MacPro with the first release, I had to buy so much stuff to make that work... SSDs, more ram, better graphics card. The iMac was like a dream when I first got it. Now it's back to being crappy. So frustrating.

Dear dlundin,

I can only confirm all your points mentionned above when using 10.1.

Until Apple either releases an update to fix the lag or updates their minimum requirements web page for the new versions (if that's the case, that would be removing some of the older hardware from the list), I think the only way to manage is to go back to your backup and get 10.0.9 back to work.

However a few points to mention (mostly to remind myself):

  • Always have at least one backup (since I got back 10.0.9 from my Time Machine things are back in order)
  • If you need to be productive, never ever upgrade to a version x.0 upgrade (either hardware or software) stay where you are until everybody suffered the bugs and then upgrade to x.1 or x.2
  • Would be nice to have Apple treat Final Cut Pro users as persons who may potentially have to downgrade 1 machine at one point. Over the years, a lot of users have spent many $$ on various FCP liscences. If one day you make a mistake, downgrading would still takes some time but at least it would be quicker to react than now.
  • I know (unfortunately by testing it several times) that Apple is generally leaving you with a very slow machine when you use the minimum requirements (this time on the graphic card). If you really want to be effective, don't upgrade if you are anywhere close to the minimum requirements unless you have double checked that it will be ok. If you don't care about this point or don't want to double or tripple check if the update is worth it, you'd better have $$ ready to get a new Mac.

Again the above points are probably mostly a reminder to myself. And I would prefer it by far to be different but it is unfortunately too often the truth....

And getting my 10.0.9 backup from my off site time machine (never keep it on site just in case) saved me once more... Do you have a recent (by recent = the number of hours/days/months you are honestly ready to loose) backup????

I too, wonder why these releases continue to come out with "two steps forward but three steps backwards". Other than the previous release of 10.0.9 (finally - a solid release), FCPX has been plagued with the same speed/freeze/crash issues over and over each time. Maybe one of the problems is the people testing the beta versions with perfectly clean "users", fresh installations, and no "real world " complex scenarios/setups which provides those testers' a false sense of the apps stability under obvious real conditions for many. "Real conditions" being different for everyone but the feedback since 10.0.0 regarding stability says it all. I see comments like "the only ones writing here are those who have problems". Well, this is not the case. There are plenty who, because of all these problems - do not write about because what is there to write about when one is aware that it is nOT problems with "preferences" etc but problems with the app itself

? All the writing in itself, wont fix that. Example the unacceptably sluggish Apple mail performance with the release of Mavericks 10.9, then updated to fix that problem later on. Nothing fixed that except the update - although plenty of "trash prefs" kind of advice was given. Two steps forward then backwards there too.

FCPX - a fantastic app whether its the new version (10.1) or the old (10.9) BUT without solid stability and smoothness, it is still hit and miss for many situations. Not ALL but , (obviously as one can read) many situations and for business, this can be a serious income killer. Perhaps the beta testing crew needs an overhaul. So far the record hasnt been the best to put it mildly...

Hi all ! I think I found a solution (at least for me on my iMac) ! 🙂

Try removing all unused or old audio and video plugins ! Some of them are not compatible with OS X Mavericks.

I also think that Perian utility has something to do with FCPX 10.1 slowness... Try removing it if you have it installed !

This works for me and now, Final Cut Pro X 10.1 runs flawlessly !!!

Good Luck all !
