FCPX 10.1 Very slow on iMac and lots of spinning beach balls

I have noticed since I have started to use FCPX 10.1 on my Late 2012 iMac (32GB RAM, 680MX Graphics, i7 quad core, thunderbold Arecca Raid) I am getting lots of spinning beach balls and things are generally slower.

I am really hoping Apple thought about people who cannot affored a Mac Pro, and ensure the performance is also good on iMacs, but unfortunately I am seeing a drop in performance compared to 10.0.9.

Has anyone else with an iMac noticed this?

I seem to mainly get the spinning beach ball when opening libraries, opening compound clips, opening projects and skiming over compound clips in a project each time the playehead moves over a different compound clip.

I tried trashing preferences, but that didn't seem to help. I am convinced performance is worse in 10.1 on my iMac.

For storage I am using an Areca Thunderbolt Raid which gives 700MB/s+ speed, so don't think that is the problem!

I see several posts relating this sad performance issues and my latest project is nearly not usable, as every change takes seconds to apply in the timeline and timeline scolling has around 10 seconds delay in 3 three minutes music video.

As several users are complaining about this, I do not think they al have defective user rights.

I have deleted the render files, opened a new library but it didn't help.

The thing is that not all projects are running so bad, some older ones do have good performance, so I gues Final Cut has damaged the project when updating to new version.

I was happy with the former 10.0.9 version but 10.1. it is a nightmare.

Any more ideas?

Same experience after upgrading to 10.1 on mid 2011 27" imac 3.4 i7 16GB of RAM. I was midway through a project when I upgraded but I also made a copy of 10.0.9 and the project so i could go back to it if anything went sideways. The project is all RED 4K and it was smooth as could be before the upgrade. Now if you just want to grab a clip and move it around the timeline there is a three second delay before you can do so. Even just grabbing an audio file and moving it a couple frames forward causes it throw a beach ball up. Play back of the timeline is perfect though, no dropped frames or anything.

As it is right now I'm loading up 10.0.9 and finishing this project. After it's done I will try and start a library from scratch and see if that makes a difference. Right now, 10.1 is just unusable for me unfortunatley.

I really hope they didn't just make my iMac obsolete. 😟

I just began a new project and was hoping for a better performance, as this is started in the new media library. But sad to see, that timeline scrolling and applying of effects is at unacceptable low speed.

Apple, this is an unbelieveable unstable version, also if many video cutters are happy with the system, there far too many complaints about unuseable performance since updrading to 10.1.

Also, in the German App Store, negative ratings are increasing. Please take into account, that not only hobby cutter are using Final Cut, but also professionals who are running their busyness and loose money if unstable versions are not marked as "beta", which it is in my opinion!

Come on Apple, you do not want to close the positive gap to Windows, don't you?

Alright, I have created a new user a Final Cut is very quick and responsive again!

But of course, I cannot access my data and project with this new and blank user account.

So my next question would be, how I can repair my old admin user, so that Final Cut behaves so well as with the new user account? All other programs ar still working well.

Or do I just have the option to set up the new user and taking the whole time to give access and all kind of programm such as email, server accesss, programms and so on? This would be also a mightmare, of course.

EVERYTHING will run "faster" after making a new user. Or reinstalling the entire OS without anything else but a single app, for that matter. I wouldnt suggest that as some kind of "solution" because it really doesnt address the problem of running smooth on a "normal" system confirguration. The fact is, 10.1 is buggy and none of the "trash prefs" etc. "create new user" is offering any real solution when its inherent to the app itself. We've got 2012 MacPro's and CTO Imacs with all of these speed issues that others report. Remember 10.1 is NOT an update of the early version - its more like a FIRST release of a new app in some ways. We've also got great, improved response in speed on several projects simply due to the nature of the updated projects (their simplicity). So its a mixed bag and these complaints are completly valid. We've seen it before - many times. A release is made, some issues solved, and other new ones appear. It's clearly a work in progress (things have obviously been re-evaluated with this new release) just packed with potential, but these issues mentioned are reported over and over again since 10.01. We have ordered a MacPro CTO 12 core 64 mb ram and the full range of topped out offerings. Will be interesting to see how this machine will handle these issues. Hopes are high if you figure in what this machine will cost (delivery in February according to the confirmation.)
