Q: Problem opening library Aperture

Hello, I just copied my Aperture Library to a new NAS (hard disk) but when I try to open the library by changing the path in Aperture version 3.4.5 / Preferences I got the following message : La photothèque sélectionnée est issue d’une version plus ancienne d’Aperture. Vous devez relancer l’application pour en changer.

After I click on "relancer" , nothing happens.

When I try to open the library by clicking on the library I have following message : Une erreur s’est produite lors de l’ouverture de la base de données de la photothèque « /Volumes/Multimedia/Photo (NAS)/13.12.09 - Sauvegarde disque dur/Aperture Library.aplibrary ».

Who can help me wth this?

Thanks in advance,

Björn

My library is created with an older version Aperture than the actual Aperture version. I did software updates but I can't solve it...

    Björn,

How is your NAS formatted? And is this NAS used as a backup with Time Machine?

The formatting of a drive is imported. Aperture requires a library to be on a drive formatted for Mac, as MacOS X Extended (Journaled). Previous versions of Aperture did not check the formatting, but the recent versions will not open a library on a drive with a different formatting.

See this support document:  Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library

A drive used by Time Machine is not suitable for an Aperture library, and your NAS will probably also need a different file system type .

    What you need to do:

    • Move your Aperture library to a drive formatted "MacOS X Extended (Journaled)".
    • Double click it to open it in the new Aperture version.
    • Aperture will launch and upgrade the library to the new version.

    Hello Léonie,

The extension of my Library on the NAS is : Aperture Library.aplibrary

    version: 3.4.5

    size: 210,2 Go

Yes, the NAS is used to make back up's with Time Machine...

How can I check if the NAS is formatted for Mac? It was a technician who did the installation.

I will now have a look on the support document you send me.

    Thanks,

    Björn

    Léonie,

I still have the file on another hard disk and with that disk I can open it.

After reading your support document, I undertood that I have to format the NAS for MAC if this was not done and after this I can copy the library on it?

    Thanks,

    Björn

To check the formatting select the drive in the Finder:

    Screen Shot 2013-12-22 at 14.48.33GMT+1.PNG

Then press the key combination ⌘I for the Finder command "File > Get Info", and in the Info panel open the "General" brick. There you will see the format.

To reformat a drive, see:   Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture

A drive can be reformatted using Disk Utility, but don't do it, if you want to use the drive as a network volume with NAS software, or with Time Machine.

Better move the Aperture library to a different drive.

    Hello Léonie,

I checked it and with ⌘I , I have ... type = MAC , but not Mac OS extended (journaled)...

Do you mean that I can't use my NAS for the Aperture Library?

a NAS is like another external hard disk no?

If not can I put my library on a "Lacie Hard Disk" but making a back up on the NAS ?

I just bought this NAS 4x 2TB to have a stable storage because I had problems with LACIE in the past.

    Life is not easy :-)....

    Thanks,

    Björn

because I had problems with LACIE in the past.

    What kind of problems?

    Yes, you can put your Aperturelibray on a Lacie drive, if you format it like this;

Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture

To backup the Aperture Library to your NAS, I recommend to create a writable diskimage on that volume. There you can write a backup copy or a vault of your Aperture library.  How to do that is described here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198

Or simply include the disk with your Aperture library into your Time Machine Backup, if you use Time MAchine with the NAS.

I checked it and with ⌘I , I have ... type = MAC , but not Mac OS extended (journaled)...

Do you mean that I can't use my NAS for the Aperture Library?

a NAS is like another external hard disk no?

The NAS has special software that needs this system, afaik. It is not just a plain drive.

I have never had such a drive, but it is not suitable for iPhoto and Aperture libraries.
