5s crashes during sync

When attempting to sync my 5s to a late 2013 Retina MBP 15" laptop, the phone crashes, showing a blue screen and then rebooting, after a few photos are copied from the laptop.

Prior to this behavior, it was showing the "iphone cannot be found" error and failing to sync.

Very frustrating...
