Q: airplay shows then doesnt

ok not sure what the correct forum is a it ovelaps my air, iPad mini and iPhone.

Basically I have an Apple TV connected and for months could stream music from my iPhone, iPad mini, and macbook air with no problem.  I wanted music outside, so picked up an airport express (I don't have a base station but told it didn't matter) to both extend the network as well as stream audio there too.

I set it up while plugged in, moved it, plugged in some speakers to test and although it did send the audio there, the Apple TV disapeard from the list on all devices.  Also, after a few minutes the airport utillity spun a little and the express had a triangle with an error saying it used to be a part of the network but now not available.

I tried a factory reset, and buggy doesn't even describe it as it will appear in the airport list, turn green, I can see the IP (at that time the apple TV just disapears) and shortly after the express then gives me the triangle.

In the initial setup, I am chaning from create a seperate network to add to an existing, but honestly that should not matter.  I actually got this as I am going on vacation and our friends are next door with wi-fi but a week signal and I figured I could use this to plugin and extend it, but looking at the doc's and the setup, this really should be eaiser than this.

I will disconnect the Apple TV in a little bit and test, but does anyone have some feedback and/or known things to do or not do as once he get's plugged in, the Apple TV drops and then shortly after the express drops.

Thanks.

    Actually it does matter. If your goal was to extend a Wi-Fi network with the Express via a wireless connection between them, the router providing the Wi-Fi network must be another Apple router (Express, Extreme, or Time Capsule).

    However, if you just want to stream audio, the Express can be configured to join another Wi-Fi network for that purpose. Please check out the following Apple Support article for details.

    Thanks for the note.  I wasn't sure and the guy at Best Buy said yes, didn't matter.  The box wasn't much help and even the link doesn't push the "must be apple".

    When I looked at the section "Connecting to an existing Wi-Fi network as part of a legacy WDS or Extended Network" it states;

    "AirPort Express extends Wi-Fi network range and streams iTunes music simultaneously using Extended Network for AirPort Express with 802.11n, or legacy WDS with AirPort Express 802.11g from another Wi-Fi base station".  I think if it said from another "Apple" base station, time capsule, etc. it would have cleared it up as it was odd, because I would say extend the network, it would pull an IP, then the Apple TV would disapear (as I realize I was now connecting to him and the apple TV was not on that same physical network", but at least you put it a bit clearer.

    So I can plug it outside and just stream music, just not have it extend my wi-fi which I think is still fine until this router dies in which I can pickup a new apple one and be done.

    Thanks again for the detailed reply.
