Mavericks time machine

I am using a ! TB Seagate, freeagent, Goflex with time machine on my MacBook running Mavericks. When I enter Time Machine the cursor is inneffective, nothing responds. I have to use Force Quit to exit Time Machine. I have got it to work once, can't say I did anything differently. ANY SUGGESTIONS? Thanks
