I can't see my photos as thumbnails. Any idea why?

I have my photos saved in iphoto and normally I can scroll through them and select photos from the thumbnails. At the moment, all I have is files and blank squares instead of photos. If I scroll down the page I can see for them for a few seconds, then the disapear. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Can anyone help?
