Can a parent set up an account for a child under 13

We bought my son an iPad mini for Christmas. I sent to the Apple store and was told I could set up an "under 13" account by going to "create new ID" However, it was rejected as in elligible? Do I need to be logged in somehow?

How does this work? Is it really possible?

Thanks

Lisa

You have to use a workaround meaning that you have to set up the ID using your birthday and address, and any other informastion that you need has to be yours. I assume that you will want to set up an ID wthout a credit card.

You will need another working email address but you can set up free email accounts using AOL, Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail. The primary reason that you will need the email address is to create the ID, but if the child already has an email address, just use that one.

The advice posted by brendan is helpful if you want to set up the device with your own Apple ID. It will allow you to have control over what the child can download.
