Power Mac G4 not turning on after clean shutdown, works otherwise.

My Power Mac G4 does not turn back on after a clean shutdown, but turns on after being disconnected from the power. If I shut it down cleanly (Apple menu -> Shutdown), it shuts down, but then the power button does not work. After unplugging the computer and plugging it back in, the computer is able to power on successfully. I have reset the PRAM and have reseated the PSU connector.

I am using Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11, but the same problem occurs under Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8. I don't think the operating system really matters with this type of issue though, because the power button literally will not respond until I unplug and replug the computer.

Any suggestions?

Hello Jonathan,

From my experience I'd say it's a bad Capacitor in the PSU or Logic board that needs to bleed down before the SMU works right.

That would make sense, but the computer can boot after a dirty restart. If I force a shutdown by holding the power button for five seconds, the computer can start back up. I don't think the capacitors would lose charge after a dirty shutdown.

Also, I forgot to mention that my system occasionally goes into a sort of "limbo" sleep. It will sleep, but the fans will stay on and then I have to force restart it. This is rare and I want to blame my USB 2.0 card but I don't have the evidence to prove it.

When it doesn't start, is there a red LED lit on the Logic board?

Any chance you could have a ground loop somwhere? Maybe some intermittent device?

Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...

Have you blown the dust out lately?

Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...

I should probably get a new PRAM battery. Where would the red LED be on the logic board? I want to make sure I'm looking in the right spot.

The temperatures aren't the problem and it's pretty clean, the computer runs rather cool for a PowerPC G4 in my opinion. It's not a ground loop either because it's happened in multiple locations (my house, a friends house, and a tech lab).

Dec 22, 2013 7:54 PM in response to BDAqua

I have the Power Mac G4 "MDD", but it's the last model which has a dual 1.42GHz G4 processor and firewire 800. I doubt it'll take a standard ATX power supply though, the one inside it is awfully "strange". This Mac is also known as the "G4 Windtunnel" because of it's excessively loud fans.

I'll test the power supply when I can.

Power Mac G4 not turning on after clean shutdown, works otherwise.
