I Have a a older iMac 5,1 and I keep getting the message, Mac os x cannot be installed on this computer, I tried the iMac install disk and I tried my macBook install disk and got the same message can anyone help.

AFAIK there was no iMac 5,1. There was however a Macbook 5,1 whose original OS was Mac OS 10.5.5 and so would not install an earlier OS like 10.4. Grey coloured disks won't help you if the disks you are trying are disassociated from the hardware. You will need to go with the retail disks that have the graphic printed on them such as 10.4 or 10.5 shown below.
