Find FCP X in your applications folder, open it (double click, command down arrow, whatever way you want), and then immediately press and hold the option key- this open a dialog box that says something like "which library would you like to open?" Click on "new" to create a "safe" library that should not have anything that could cause FCP to crash, name it something like "crash test library" and save it. Does FCP open with that new Library open?

If yes, then quit and reopen to see what it does that time. If it still works, try opening the Library or Libraries that were causing the crashing. It may be that the quit saves a new "saved state" of FCP that does not lead to a crash.

If one Library crashes FCP, then you know it would appear to have something to do with that Library. I would guess it will open with no problems if you are able to get FCP to work with the test library.

Best wishes.

I have done a quick search for Library repair workflows, but have found none. Aperture and iPhoto both have "repair Libraries" functions, but I do see that documented anywhere for FCPX.

Hopefully you have the original Events and Projects folders from the Library creation from your 10.0.9 files, I'd move a copy of them back into their original lcoations and use the "update Projects and Events" under the file menu to see if they will import properly this time.

There's a great article about moving these folders that may be helpful, though it is intended for the upgrade, it can be helpful as Philip is documenting a step by step upgrading to Libraries. He offers the free Event Manager X to coordinate and move the folders to where FCPX will see it.

Good luck.

Problem with rendering is an old problem. After you have opened your safe Library as described go in to preferences and turn of auto rendering. Then open your crashing library and perhaps you now can find out what clip is coursing the trouble. If you only have one unrendered clip delete it from the timeline if all clips or some are unrendered start rendering manually with skift-ctrl-R and try to observe where on timeline crasches occurs. Or render one clip a time by activating it and use ctrl-R rendering only that clip. Sooner or later you will find what clip is causing the trouble. No guarantees but I have done this several times and succeeded.

Use the Event Manager X to import each Event/Project you had in 10.0.9 separately, one at a time. This will give you unfettered access to the ones that are no problem, and 10.1 will let you merge them later if you so desire.

And when you get to that one that doesn't work, may find what the problem is with those files- I know Mavericks uses some different video frameworks (I'm not 100% certain that's the technical jargon for it), when I open some video clips I downloaded off the internet in QuickTime 10, it converts them to be able to display them. I would guess that it is the source video that's crashing the Library based on that, though if you did play that video in 10.0.9, it does cast some doubt on my story. ::grin::

But if by importing one at a time you are able to get most of the stuff updated, you're ahead of where you were before. And a more specific place to look for what's gone wrong.

The article above (Philip Hodgetts) shows how to do them one at a time, or bundling a few to make one new Library.

good luck!

Sorry about saying Event Manager X "importing", it is actually a tool to help FCPX by managing the import into Libraries as you choose. There is a link to the application in the article, just under "Smarter Upgrading". It is free, and automates some of the steps that would make for the best updating process, especially if you want more than one Library.

If you responded to the 10.1 updating process with a "save" when it asked you what to do with the stuff it updated, the old events and project folders will reside in a folder called "'harddrive name' Old Final Cut Projects and Events", in the same folder they came from. If you asked FCPX to trash them, they are in your trash unless you emptied your trash since you moved them there, and that would mean they are now deleted.

If you trashed them, you would be best to get them from your backup.

The import/ update into 10.1 is where you separate the Events.

Personally I love that all the files are in the singular bundle of a Library. My workflows are seldom connected to each other, and I've used tricks (disc images) to get them segregated from other "projects" in the past.

warm regards.

That was great info, but now here is my problem. I could have sworn I said to keep, but the folder is not there, and not in trash. I even did an undelete and NOTHING.

Is there any way to open the package and remove a project and its events without corrupting the package? this is becoming as you can imagine very frustrating.

Yes I know about back ups, and I thought I had, but seems I did not back up this particular drive and I have no idea why.

Sorry, old chap.

I don't think the package would tolerate having its database files moved or removed. If you want to try, certainly you'd want to copy that Library to another drive and rename it to indicate it's your experimental Library. You can remove the media, but all the Project info is in the files that would have no context if placed outside of the folders in which they were written.

Don't throw out the original Library. While unlikely, it is possible a future update would be able to open or repair it. Or someone could write a repair app of some sort.

I'd suggest getting AppleCare involved. Based on my conversations with them, the FCPX guys would like to know what happened during your upgrade.

good luck!
