recently upgraded pages & numbers . now have two icons for each and when i try to open some docs in from old icon it gives message that it is unsupported. What do i do?

The old items should work with the old apps, unless you inadvertently opened them with the new apps.

When you have two versions of the same app on your Dock it can be confusing. I would recommend removing the older version's icon from the Dock and only use latest versions of the Apps (Pages 5 and Numbers 3) to open your files. If you don't know how to remove an app from the Dock simply click and drag it to the desktop and and it will be removed in a puff of smoke. Don't worry though the old versions of the apps will still reside in the Applications folder

I wouldn't, since the new ones removed significant furnctionality. Which one the OP should use is up to them.

Valid point if the OP uses the functionality you are referring to. However keeping both versions of the app on the Dock could make it confusing so it would be up to the OP to recall what version of the app they used to edit a document.

Personally I'm not a power user of either app so I wasn't personally affected by the new versions.
