I am Trying to use a seagate HardDrive as a Time Capsule connected via usb to an old A1143 Airport Extreme. Cant seem to find the drive. Any pointers out there. Anything Special I need to do. 10.9 mavericks.

Time Machine backups to a USB drive on the older AirPort Extreme models are NOT officially supported by Apple, so that might explain some of the difficulty that you are having. See this Apple support document to confirm:

If you want to try this anyway, all that you really do is make sure that the Seagate drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) since Time Machine requires that drive format.
