Image Capture Error (-9934)

Since installing a new SSD drive with a fresh install of Mavericks I have been struggling to import any images. Both of my Canon cameras (PowerShot 550 and Rebel T3) as well as iPhones and iPods return the error 'Import error (-9934)' when trying to copy an image.

At this point my only viable workaround is to use a USB card reader and copy the files through the Finder. Obviously this doesn't work for devices without a removable SD card.

The SD cards I'm working with are not locked and I changed the capture destination several times to verify it is a valid folder with write permissions. Dragging images to the desktop from the Image Capture window also produces the same -9934 error.

I've found very little discussion about this error so any help is greatly appreciated!

HI Eric and thanks a lot for your answer.I didn't find this "An ignore Ownership" option as u mentioned above but in the process trying to find it checked Sharing and permissions on my External hard drive.I haven't give it a full access write and read and that was the problem not to find a way to transfer photos.I gave it only to my Mac.Now it works for me and I really appreciate your help.My next problem is how to transfer videos directly to external drive and flash in order to free some valuable space on my Mac.If you have a solution,it will be great.I managed to transfer all my photos to EHD but no videos were able to be send there. Thanks in advance...

My story:

For one month since I upgrade to 10.9, Image import is working fine.

For some unrelated reason, I decided to do a permissions repair.

Subsequently, image capture failed with error -9934. Being so soon after permissions repair, I suspected that the folder that the images are imported into ( ~/Pictures) had been given incorrect permissions. I don't even remember what they were, but I'm sure my account had read/write access. I just gave universal access - and then image import immediately worked fine again.

17thEarl's solution solved my problem also.

I was trying to download pictures to my desktop folder from my iPhone via imagecapture. I kept getting the -9934 error code. After reading 17thEarl's advice, I went to the "get info" option on my desktop folder. In the "Sharing and Permissions" block i gave everyone read and write permission. I was then able to download the photos from my iPhone.

Thank you, Lord de Vere (or whoever you are)

I think we will need to get some info first.

- what version OS X?

- have you recently fixed permissions ( this is more for the thread's sake as documentation than for you specifically)

- did you grant full access to ~/Pictures? Can give us GUI or terminal output ( i.e. ls -al )

- You're using you're system's standard image capture?

- If still no success, I recommend looking through logs. I think the application log is most appropriate.

post relevant info during an attempt to sync. If unfamiliar with logs, try searching for info, these are the first two results I get on gewgll:

User uploaded file

It would be nice if we could maintain our 100% success rate with this issue, so good luck!

I'm sorry Earl but I don't think I'm at your level of automation knowledge, in fact, far from it. So I don't know how to deal with this. When I mentioned in my first reply to your post that I tried what you had recommended in the first place, I was referring to the fact of changing permissions on the destination directory for the transfer onto my MBP.

Thanks for your help but unfortunately I don't understand it.

I was not referring to any automation by any construal of that term I am familiar with. I'll also apologize because managing a team of developers is going to have to take precedence over microexplaining, I can't turn a thread into unix school. All of the information you are looking for is available widely. Perhaps someone can step in here. As my craftily passive-aggressive father told me a few hundred times "no one ever explained it to me."

I'm sure this thread will continue to be of use to many.

My dear Earl, I'm sorry to have extracted such a condescending answer from you.

I understand that you might not want to turn this thread into a unix school but this is not what I was asking.

By posting such a complex reply to my original simple question you might have wanted to demonstrate how knowledgeable you are. "Well above the average Bear". What I see here is a rather pompous ignoramus trying to turn a simple answer into a sophisticated complex answer.

I think that your father's passive-aggressive attitude might have rubbed off on you and it's unfortunate that you air your personal father and son relationship in public like this.

If others can tolerate this kind of attitude, fine with me but I will not bother you again. Promise.

Thanks for nothing my dear "Earl".

I had the same problem on my image import from an ipad to my MBP. It turns out my issue was not static file permissions directly, but the filesystem state after a large-size video transfer. So the symptoms are:
- start image capture

- start import of bunch of files

- one or few more succeed, and then one fails with Error 9934; this behavior keeps repeating

The issue seems, after an import is finished in Image Capture, it takes some time in the filesystem to finalize the file transfer from a temp state. If you put a short delay between imports, and verify that file becomes available in the filesystem before starting the next import, this might work for you as well.
