2010 Unibody Macbook won't start up.

My son has a 2010 unibody white macbook that began having some startup issues with recognizing the hd. We replaced the hd and have the following issues. I can't get it to load an operating system without it powering down. Whether I use an optical drive or a start-up disk on a flash drive, after a few minutes the machine just powers off. Since it just powers off, I cannot get Disk Utility to come up so I can look at anything. Could this be ram issues...or a logic board...or what? How can I test a machine that won't stay on?

I cannot give specifics on the machine because I cannot power it up and my son has no idea (duh).

It could either be an issue with the ram or logic board, also have you checked the HD in any other machine. We aren't much help here because we arent able to physically see the machine but you could take it to a local apple store and have them look it over.
