I use the timer when giving a lecture, to see how much time I have left. But the screen goes dim after a while and I have to touch it again and enter my unlock code to see it every so often. Is there any convenient way (without permanently disabling unlock code) to make it keep showing the timer and not black out the screen?

The second app (Jumbo Stopwatch) is the better of the two, just tested it last night...
This is the Jumbo Stopwatch interface. Tapping the button indicated by the arrow stops the screen from dimming. It's that simple. And it's free...
You've replied to a year old post. The OP has likely moved on by now.
Use the Settings app to set a longer interval before the iPhone auto locks.
The available intervals are 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 minutes and never.
Settings > General > Auto-lock > set a longer interval or set it to never.
