my phone was taken and is offline how do i find the last know location?

It will show the last known location for 24 hours after it went offline.
After that you can't get the location
But why only 24 hours. I bet many iPhone's would already be found if they showed the last known location for much longer. I mean it wouldn't hurt anything if they did. Why don't they Do this?
