The only way to do that on the iPhone 3 is with syncing via a supported application on the computer. The iPhone 3 does not support iCloud. However, if you are using Gmail, you can use the Google Contacts and sync to the new device.

Back up the iPhone 3. Then restore that backup to the new iPhone. Note that this will overwrite everything on the new iPhone.
