THIS WORKED FOR ME!

I have Windows 8 Professional, Itunes 11.1.4, and an IPAD 2. My itunes all of the sudden stopped recognizing my IPAD 2 (i think it may have started doing when i updated my Windows 8 to Windows 8.1). i tried everything, and finally Mario's solution worked for me (see below as well):

  • Plug your Ipad USB cable into USB port.
  • Go to your Control Panel, click Hardware and Sound, then click Device Manager.
  • Click on Portable Devices, and you should see Apple Ipad shown (or whatever apple device your using).
  • Right-click the Apple Device your using, and choose Update Driver Software..
  • Click "Browse my computer for driver software."
  • Click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer."
  • Click the Have Disk button. (If the Have Disk option is not present, choose a device category such as Mobile Phone or Storage Device if listed, and click next. The Have Disk button should then appear.)
  • In the "Install from Disk" dialog, click the Browse button.
  • Use this window to navigate to the following folder:
  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.
  • Double-click the "usbaapl" file. (This file will be called "usbaapl64" if you have a 64-bit version of Windows. If you don't see "usbaapl64" here, or if there is no Drivers folder, look in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers. instead).
  • Click OK in the "Install from Disk" dialog.
  • Click Next and finish the driver-installation steps. Open iTunes to verify that the device is recognized properly.

I just tried this for my iPhone 5 with windows 8.1 and when I click on ok for the install I receive an error message--the folder you specified doesn't contain a compatible software driver for your device. If the folder contains a driver, make sure it is designed to work with Windows for x64-based systems. The file is listed at usbaapl64.

I have't been able to sync my iPhone since November. It would be great to be able to do that.

I have tried finding the driver following these directions, but there is no Drivers file. I tried the first route and there was not "usbaapl" file so I tried the next folder and there was not drivers in the Program Files (x86) option.

  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.
  • Double-click the "usbaapl" file. (This file will be called "usbaapl64" if you have a 64-bit version of Windows. If you don't see "usbaapl64" here, or if there is no Drivers folder, look in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers. instead).

Any help would be great! Thank you
