i followed the following from another thread and it worked for me and alot of others:

This is what I did for both iPod Touch 3rd Gen and iPad Retina with Windows 8.1:

  1. Plugged the iPod (or iPad) into a USB port.
  2. Opened Windows Device Manager, and under the Portable Devices tree, found the Apple iPod.
  3. Right-clicked iPod (or iPad) and selected Update Driver Software... option.

For me i.ally's hint doesn't worked.

But with Win8 I didn't had a problem.

With 8.1 I have big ones. Can't sync, can't backup, can't wipe my photos (more than 2000 so I don't want to del every single one manually).

Great thing!

iTunes is already de-installed and reinstalled 2x times.

Drivers are already de-installed and reinstalled at last iTunes install.

No hope left.. By the way: I didn't upgraded my iPad to iOS 7 cause that looks ugly to me.

Reinstalling Driver from own sources c:\programs\ ...

> Quote:

  • Right-click the Apple iPhone, Apple iPad, or Apple iPod entry in Device Manager and choose Update Driver from the shortcut menu.
  • Click "Browse my computer for driver software."
  • Click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer."
  • Click the Have Disk button. (If the Have Disk option is not present, choose a device category such as Mobile Phone or Storage Device if listed, and click next. The Have Disk button should then appear.)
  • In the "Install from Disk" dialog, click the Browse button.
  • Use this window to navigate to the following folder:
  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.
  • Double-click the "usbaapl" file. (This file will be called "usbaapl64" if you have a 64-bit version of Windows. If you don't see "usbaapl64" here, or if there is no Drivers folder, look in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers. instead).
  • Click OK in the "Install from Disk" dialog.
  • Click Next and finish the driver-installation steps. Open iTunes to verify that the device is recognized properly.
