Q: Compressor 4.1 Crashing

Hey there!  Love the new Compressor 4.1.  It's so simplified!  All you do is import your FCPX file, choose an output or two, hit submit, and voila! It freezes and crashes!

"That's weird," you might be thinking.  "Must have been a fluke," you tell yourself.  "After all, there's no way Apple would take a perfectly fine, working program and replace it with some piece of crap so buggy it can't even export a single file."  So you reopen it.  Ah!  Your FCPX project is still there.  That's nice, all you have to do is rechoose those outputs.  So you click on the "add outputs" button and WHAT THE **** IT JUST CRASHED AGAIN.  DIDN'T EVEN FREEZE TO THINK ABOUT IT, JUST POOF IT'S GONE.

Ok, your flash of fury has passed.  You calm down.  You take a deep breath, pondering your options.  I mean, it must be something wrong on your end, right?  Compressor 4.1 not only works, it's way better than 4.0.7, that's why they released it!  So, you restart your computer, and open compressor.  Look at that!  Your FCP project is still there.  "But wait!" you say.  "That would be too easy!"  So you deftly click on the project to delete it, so that you can reopen FCP and reimport a fresh version.  Just waiting for the spinning ball to register your click.  Silly Compressor, it's probably trying to load that old project.  Doesn't it know I'm just gonna delete OH MY GOD WHERE'D COMPRESSOR GO.  ARE YOU KIDDING ME, IT CRASHED AGAIN.  I HADN'T EVEN TRIED TO START A BATCH.  I LITERALLY JUST CLICKED THE FILE TO DELETE IT AND IT CRASHED.  WHAT THE **** IS THIS CRAP.

Ok, ok, ok.  You're better than this.  Don't let this thing beat you.  You've got it.  Instead of clicking the project, you'll RIGHT click it, and "cut" the project.  It works!!  It's all clear.  You, good sir, are a genius.  You reopen FCPX, resend to compressor, and rechoose your outputs.  Only, this time, you choose just one output, and a preset one at that.  You click ok and the "Start Batch" button lights up!  It's working!!  You click start batch and hear your external drive start to spool!  The ball starts to spin, but worry not!  That's just because it's trying to add it to the "active" menu.  Although, it is taking quite a while... A very long while... No... This can't be hapenning... No. no, no no no nononononono nonn nono no no nonn on non nono!!!! IT FROZE AGAIN.  IT EFFING FROZE AGAIN. IT IS LITERALLY INCAPABLE OF DOING AAAAAANNNNNNYYYYYYTTTTTHHHHHIIIIIIINNNNNNGGGGGG.  Sick update guys!

You know what would be cool?  Some kind of explanation as to why this crap replaced my perfectly fine 4.0.7 version.  You know what would be even better?  To be able to export my film.

Of course, you kept a back-up copy of 4.07 you can roll back to…just in case. Correct?

updating and then rolling back seems a strange path. i 'zapp applicationed' 4.1 altogether then fresh reinstalled it from app store. it seems to work fine now. my problems with compressor started when mac os or external lacie hd went to sleep during batch processing. I've now modified power management never to put the computer nor hard drives to sleep.

I'm having same problem. Tried to zapp 4.1 and reinstall from the App store with no difference.

This seems a lot like my bad old days working with Microsoft updates. Install an update and now the app fails.

How many days till Apple fixes this?

    I have the same problem.

I was positive it was a problem on my end, but reading this thread and seeing others' experiencing the same problem, I see it was just very coincidental timing.  I just finished installing a PCI SSD drive in my Mac Pro, I figured it had something to do with the migration from the old HD to the new one.

Compressor on my mbpr is working fine (knock on wood), so I'm not sure why on my Mac Pro it crashes every time I click Add Outputs.

I hope the publish an update soon...

I did an app cleaner drill and removed compressor 4.1 completely and then reinstalled it after restarting the mac. Sitll does not work. Everything else in Mavericks does save for Compressor, an app I unfortunately need as without it, my Matrox 02 m264 encoder becomes a brick. This is absolutely inexcusable that Apple has allowed this to happen. Pros like myself remember and, if you buy a Mac Pro, what's the chanced of having Compressor be a brick there. DIscusted does not begin to describe how I feel about this disaster.

I spoke with tech support a few hours ago. Most of the issues they are seeing with Compressor crashing seem to be related to Matrox. The solution seems to be to work without the Matrox settings in Compressor. I took the Compressor folder out of Library/Application Support (using Finder Option/Go to see the Library folder) and put the Compressor folder onto my Desktop.

Compressor started working again. I then went back into the Compressor folder I moved to the Desktop and dragged some non Matrox settings back into Compressor and dropped them into Custom settings.

There still seems to be an issue with creating new custom settings. Again, these issues seem only to occur with users who have Matrox. My workaround is to duplicate an existing setting and then modifying it.

Your Matrox is a brick until Matrox catches up to Mavericks and FCP and Compressor. I was getting real time compression using my Matrox Mini. I am now getting three times that speed just using Compressor on my (fairly recent) laptop and the fan stays off so the laptop processor doesn't seem to be working that hard. 64 bit apps make a difference. 20 minutes to compress nearly an hour of tape to 1080p at 10 kbps. I would never have bought the Matrox if I had that speed before.

Glad it worked. Common culprit in Matrox.

Compressor 4.1 is now crashing again without Matrox. I must say this is the worst upgrade I have ever seen with Apple. If Jobs were alive, heads would roll. Absolutely worthless. The app worked for a while, thanks to PaloDave's terrific advice, but elation over it working was shortlived. Everything else runs in Maverick save this piece of crap. Question, how do I get my $50 back?

Sorry to hear it. At some point between my first and second repair of Compressor I found Matrox settings had reappeared in my Library/Application Support/Compressor folder. I don't know how they got there. My second fix consisted of dumping that folder and letting Compressor rebuild it. Since then I haven't seen any Matrox settings within that folder.

I'd double check your Library folder and see if the same has happened. Otherwise call tech support. They'll put you through to a Pro Video / Compressor support guy. They seem to be aware of the Compressor / Matrox issues and might want your added input.
