Dec 24, 2013 2:11 AM in response to tinajaypeeby Baby Boomer (USofA),Do you have the "no pop ups" setting enabled in Safari's Preferences as well as all the other browsers you are using?
BTW: There are no viruses for OSX.
Viruses: Are programs that earn their name by their ability to replicate themselves locally & often across a network. Many attach themselves to to other programs. When you launch one of these programs, the virus code launches as well & the virus goes about its nefarious business. Viruses are exceedingly rare on the Mac. There are no known viruses for OSX.

Dec 24, 2013 2:11 AM in response to tinajaypeeby K Shaffer,Is your MacBook Pro able to run Windows OS in a bootcamp or other parition or virtual machine?
If so, you'd have to get an antivirus software to deal with that, in Windows. Those won't affect Mac usually unless you got one and put it into the Mac OS yourself by giving it your Admin or User level authorization. Or fall for some scam product that offers a free trial, and many of those are known in the community, to avoid.
There are settings in Safari that should help block or negate some of the symptoms you noted here. However some web sites have now employed newer tactics to get ads under and over the current open window. I try to keep the most recent version of Browser updated, and often use more than one browser. Usually I have four of five different ones installed, but only use two at a time, to avoid any conflict. My default browser no longer is Safari because in my vintage system, it no longer sees updates; so I used a setting in Safari to choose a different browser as Default. My choice now opens instead of Safari, but I can still launch it if I want.
So don't fall for some 'fix your mac - click here' online ads for some magic cure, since some of those are avenues to truly infect a mac. The main gateway is due to user action, be that inattentiveness, or other neglict to attend to details through research and learning. There are steps to take to more securely maintain a Mac.
Some articles in the Support database or troubleshooting section of Apple's site may be helpful in handling the newest versions of Safari. Mostly a matter of changing settings in the browser. And there also is a Discussion Community with topics such as Safari as their main theme, here in this site.
Hope this helps somewhat.
Good luck & happy computing!

Dec 24, 2013 3:02 AM in response to tinajaypeeby thomas_r.,You are not infected with any kind of malware.
By default, in recent systems, Safari will re-load all the pages that were open when it last quit. If that's what you're seeing, and you don't want that to happen, open Safari, then choose Preferences from the Safari menu and click the General icon in the window that opens. Change the "Safari opens with" setting from "All windows from last session" to "A new window."
If that's not what you're seeing, you'll need to be more specific about what's happening.
As for the mouse issues, see:
My mouse keeps moving around on its own, as if someone is remotely controlling my Mac!

Dec 24, 2013 12:07 PM in response to tinajaypeeby Linc Davis,There are several possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried until it's resolved. Some may not be applicable.
1. Follow the instructions in this support article, and also this one, if applicable.
2. Open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check for unknown or forgotten input devices. Disconnect any USB input devices that you aren't using.
3. Boot in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you reboot as usual, stop here and post your results. If you can't boot in safe mode, do the same. If you booted in safe mode and there was no change, go on to the next step.
4. Reset the System Management Controller.
5. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
6. A swollen battery in a MacBook Pro or Air can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced without delay.
7. Press down all four corners of the trackpad at once and release. If there's any effect, it's likely to be temporary, and the unit needs to be serviced or replaced.
8. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built-in trackpad of a MacBook to behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
9. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
10. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think that your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
11. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine and/or external trackpad tested.

Dec 31, 2013 10:47 PM in response to Linc Davisby emboite,I recently (and most unfortunately) got a virus / bug on my mac when searching piano sheet music of all things.
I didn't have latest updates installed for Firefox which was the browser I was using (I'm on limited data living in a remote area so can't update regularly, usually my updates fail because the conncetion is too poor)>
System: Mac OSx 10.6.8
don't know which version of firefox, sorry, was updated last in Jan 2013
Problems:
I am running Windows for Mac 2011 release and have experienced problems in Word - as I'm typing the cursor will suddenly jump to a different part of the text, or highlight a whole section of text. This was happening when typing on internet also, but has stopped.
When on internet (using either firefox or safari) random words on the web page will display as a quick link with a small green icon (with a circle and arrow) above them, I also experience un warrented pop ups opening in a new window when clicking regular links on any page.
Any help greatly appreciated!
