In three adjacent cells, I type numbers like 1, 2, and 3. Then I highlight them and three cells below, hoping to somehow get Numbers to continue the list with 4, 5, and 6.
I think I used to be able to do this in Excel.

In Numbers 3 enter the three number (actually you only need to enter two to establish a pattern), then hover the cursor over the edge and drag the yellow fill control as needed:
Thanks for the quick response, but that repeats the series. What I want to do is have Number continue the series so that what I highlight 1, 2, 3, and 4, the cells below that appear as 5, 6, 7, and 8.

The only way I can get the pattern to repeat is if I enter

in a column, then select and fill down as I described. Enter the pattern once:

I just solved the problem by only highlighting two cells and then dragging down as you described. By doing that, the series continues.
