How to split merged mails on gmail on iPad

My gmail sometimes merges threads that have nothing to do with each other. How can I split or unmerge them. I tried the edit feature which didn't help. Short of forwarding the mismerged item to myself and deleting the one that got stuck in with another thread, has anyone got any neater ideas and even better, how to stop it happening!
